There are no authenticated Hilal sighting reports from mainland USA or Canada on September 19. An apparent sighting claim near New Orleans, LA was unreliable on the basis of incorrect time, shape and location. Negative reports were received from Florida, Texas, California etc. The Astronomical Data also predicted that Hilal would not be sighted by naked-eye in mainland USA.
Thus we complete 30 days of Ramadan and celebrate Eid ul Fitr on Monday, September 21, 2009. This decision was reached unanimously by the Hilal Committee and the final decision was made by the Ameer of the Committee Maulana Ghouse Nadawi in California.

Hundreds of experienced observers scattered from Albany NY to Brownsville, TX and several places in California tried to sight the Hilal and confirmed that the Shawwal Hilal was not visible
anywhere inspite of clear skies.

Hilal
has been sighted over many places (Florida, Texas etc) in the USA after
the sunset on Friday 21st
August 2009. The astronomical data also strongly predicted the
possibility of naked-eye sighting in most of North America.
Therefore we announce that Saturday, 22nd August 2009 is the first

There was no naked-eye sighting of Hilal in our Matla. Hence Shaban 1430H starts on Friday, July 24, 2009G. The Hilal Sighting Committee of North America considers Canada and Contiguous USA - excluding Hawaii and Alaska as one Matla. Further, it requires Jamme Ghafeer or large number of witnesses, in the case of clear skies as well as in the case of Astronomical impossibility, following Fatawa of top international scholars.

Hilal of Rajab was sighted in Round Rock, TX (at 9:05 pm central time), Blacksburg, VA, Sanford Florida etc.. on June 23, 2009G by naked eye. Hence Rajab 1430H starts on June 24, 2009G in North America.

A nice Fatwa in favor of Local Hilal Sighting from Muslim World League (Rabita AlAlami AlIslami) with names of Top Saudi scholars including Sheikh BinBaz RH and Sheikh AlOthaimeen RH and also a top Indian Scholar Sheikh Abu Al Hassan Al Nadawi and many others.
This fatwa was translated by Brother Yasir Butt, Assistant Khateeb at Islamic Society of Greater Salt Lake.
